CIPAC Opposes United Nations Anti-Israel Activities

CIPAC opposes giving our taxpayer dollars to the United Nations (UN) until it ends its selective and unremitting bias and demonization of Israel. America’s UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley, said this unfair focus on Israel reflects long-standing “anti-Israel bias”.  The most egregious example of UN anti-Semitism is UN Security Council Resolution 2334, whose passage was facilitated by President Obama when he ordered our UN Ambassador at the time to abstain rather than veto this resolution.  President Obama did this just before his term ended.  This resolution was aimed at isolating Israel and encouraging economic warfare against it.  US gives the UN over $8 billion every year, about 25% of its budget.

CIPAC urges House Members to cosponsor H.R. 2232 (Promoting Equality and Accountability at the United Nations Act of 2017), introduced by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL).

H.R 2232 requires the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to be reformed or US funding will be limited;

Removes funding from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) unless specific reforms are enacted;

Reconfirms US law on denying funding to any UN organization that unilaterally admits the PLO as a member, and requires the State Department to certify that the UN is addressing its anti-Semitism problems.

CIPAC urges Senators to cosponsor S.169 (To counter anti-Semitism at the United Nations, and for other purposes.) intrduced by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) This is a similar bill to H.R. 2232.

CIPAC urges Senators to cosponsor S.107 (Safeguard Israel Act of 2017), introduced by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

S. 107 prohibits US payments to the United Nations until UN Security Council Resolution 2334 is repealed in its entirety.

UN Security Council Resolution 2334, a gross departure from previous US policy regarding Israel, includes the following provisions:

  • It considers Judaism’s holiest site, including the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Mount of Olives Cemetery and the entire Jewish quarter of Jerusalem’s old city as “occupied Arab land”.  It also states that Israeli homes built in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria violate international law;
  • It asserts that the 1949 armistice line (the “Green  Line”) is the inter-national border of Israel;
  • It enshrines establishment of a Palestinian Arab state as the only alternative;
  • It explicitly calls for an end to Israeli “occupation”;
  • It asks member states “to examine practical ways and means to secure the full implementation of its relevant resolutions”, encouraging BDS.  The Human Rights Council requested and received $138,700 to create a database of all companies that conduct business – directly or indirectly – relating to Israeli “settlements” in Arab-claimed territories.

CIPAC urges House Members to cosponsor H.R. 769 (Safeguard Israel Act of 2017), introduced by Reps. Kay Granger (R-TX) and Lee Zeldin (R-NY).

This is the House counterpart to S.107 above.

The UN has three standing committees dedicated to attacking Israel.  Other UN committees routinely attack Israel, one of which accused Israel of practicing apartheid.  UNESCO has explicitly denied Jewish links to Jerusalem, the Temple Mount and other Jewish holy sites.

It is time for the US to stop funding these scurrilous attacks on Israel.  The $8 billion we give to the UN should be spent on activities that will directly benefit US citizens instead of contributing to false and harmful resolutions that perpetuate slander against our most trusted and valuable democratic ally in the Middle East.

S.107, H.R. 769, S. 169 and H.R. 2232  are worthy of the support of all members of Congress who recognize the appalling anti-Israel and anti-Semitic actions of the UN for what they are.
